Company van benefit tax: when a servicebil gets taxed

15 July 2026 · 9 min · taxvehiclesswedenadminelectricians

Company van benefit tax (in Sweden, bilförmån on a servicebil) is triggered by the right to use the van privately, not by how much you actually drive it. If a van is available to you or an employee for private trips, Skatteverket assumes it is used privately and taxes the full benefit value for the whole year. There are only three ways out: the private driving stays inside the ringa omfattning limit of at most 10 occasions and at most 100 mil (1,000 km) per calendar year, both at once; the vehicle is so heavily fitted that it counts as a work tool and the value is reduced (jämkning) on application; or you remove the right of disposal in writing and can prove it. The thing that decides all three, two years later, is a driving log (körjournal) written on the day, not reconstructed from memory.

This article is written for Swedish rules, because Sweden is unusually strict: there is no flat-rate van charge like the UK's, and no sign-writing exemption like New Zealand's work-related vehicle rule. If you run vans outside Sweden, the reasoning below still transfers — the evidence problem is identical — but the numbers are not.

What triggers company van benefit tax

The rule lives in Inkomstskattelagen chapter 61. A benefit exists where an employee (including an owner who takes a salary from their own AB) can use a vehicle owned or leased by the company for private purposes. Three things people get wrong:

A light truck (lätt lastbil, up to 3.5 tonnes) is covered by the same benefit rules as a car. Two seats and a bulkhead do not exempt anything by themselves.

The ringa omfattning limits, precisely

Private use is disregarded only if it is of ringa omfattning — negligible extent. Skatteverket's position is firm and quantified:

An occasion is a private use event, not a leg. Driving to a shop and back on a Saturday is one occasion. Where it goes wrong in practice is the small stuff nobody logs: collecting the kids after a callout, a Sunday tip run, driving the van to the padel court because it was on the drive. Ten disappears faster than 1,000 km does. Count occasions, not kilometres, as your early-warning number.

When a fitted servicebil counts as a work tool

A van kitted out as a rolling workshop — fixed racking, drawer units, cable reels, a pipe threader, an inverter, a bench, a genuinely full load area — has limited value as a private vehicle. Swedish practice recognises this in two different ways, and they are not the same thing:

1. Reduced value (jämkning)

Where fitting or livery meaningfully restricts private usefulness, the benefit value can be adjusted downwards by Skatteverket on application. This is the normal outcome for a fully fitted service van. It is a reduction, not an exemption — you still report a benefit, just a smaller one. There is no percentage written in law; the reduction reflects how much private utility the fitting actually removes, so the evidence you file matters more than the adjective you use.

2. No benefit at all

Reserved for vehicles that cannot reasonably serve as private transport — think a crane truck, a tipper with a permanently mounted body, a van whose entire cargo area is occupied by fixed plant. A Transit with racking down one side is not this vehicle. Do not assume it is.

How to apply: the employer applies to Skatteverket for an adjusted benefit value, ideally before the tax year rather than after it. Send photographs of the fitted interior from all sides, an itemised list of the installed equipment with the fitter's invoice, weight and load-volume figures showing how little usable space is left, and the written policy on private use. A one-line claim that the van is a work tool gets you nothing. See skatteverket.se for the current application route and forms.

Dispositionsrätt: how the argument is actually run

Dispositionsrätt is the right of disposal. Removing it is what a strong case is built on, and it is a factual argument, not a paperwork one. What Skatteverket weighs:

Note the direction of proof. Skatteverket does not have to prove you drove privately. You have to make it more likely than not that you did not.

The records that decide it two years later

Skatteverket can reopen an income year within two years of the end of the assessment year as a routine matter, and up to six years where information was incorrect or missing. So the audit lands long after everyone has forgotten the week in question. A körjournal is not, strictly, mandatory in law. In practice it is the only thing that wins.

Per trip, record:

Two extra rules. First, the annual figures must close: opening odometer plus logged business plus logged private equals closing odometer, to the kilometre. A gap is read as private driving. Second, keep it contemporaneous. An electronic logger writing automatically as the van moves, or an app entry made in the cab, is credible. A spreadsheet built in March from job cards is not, and a reviewer can usually tell.

The practical fix is not more discipline. It is removing the moment of remembering. If your jobs already carry an address and a timestamp, the log should build itself from them. In OdinTask, arrivals and departures on the geofenced time clock and the job addresses on the day's schedule give you a dated, per-technician record of where each van was and why — the backbone a körjournal needs, captured while the work happens rather than reconstructed afterwards. You still add odometer readings; you no longer invent the rest.

Electric vans and how 2026 changed the number

The benefit value is calculated from the vehicle's nybilspris (list price when new, plus extras), combined with a share of the prisbasbelopp, an interest-related component tied to the statslåneränta, and the actual fordonsskatt on top. The percentage-based green-car reduction was replaced in July 2022 by a fixed reduction of the nybilspris: a set amount for electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, a smaller one for gas, capped relative to the vehicle's price. That change matters more for cheap vans than expensive ones: on an entry-level electric panel van the fixed reduction can remove most of the price base, while on a premium one it barely dents it.

Two more 2026 points to check rather than assume:

The exact amounts, the multiplier and the caps move most years. Take them from skatteverket.se for the year you are filing, not from a blog post — including this one.

A decision table you can act on

SituationLikely outcomeWhat to do now
Van parked at home, no log, no policyFull benefit, whole yearStart a log today; write the policy; expect the current year to be taxed
Van at home, written ban, employee has own car, log reconcilesArguable no benefitKeep the log contemporaneous and reconciled to the odometer
Fully fitted servicebil, some private useReduced value on applicationApply for jämkning with photos, kit list, load figures
Under 10 occasions and under 100 mil, loggedNo benefitTrack occasions weekly; the count runs out before the kilometres do
Van kept at premises, keys in the officeNo benefitLog anyway; it costs nothing and it is your only defence

The five-minute audit

  1. For each van: where does it sleep, and who has the key.
  2. Is there a signed, dated private-use ban. If not, write one this week.
  3. Open a log with odometer fields today. Do not backfill; a clean start beats a fabricated history.
  4. Count private occasions year-to-date, honestly. If you are past ten, the year is decided — plan for the benefit rather than hoping.
  5. Photograph every fitted van interior now, while the kit is in it, and keep the fitter's invoice. That folder is your jämkning application.

None of this is exotic. It is a habit that takes fifteen seconds per trip and settles an argument you will have long after you have forgotten the trip. If your job system already knows where the van went, let it do most of the remembering. Try OdinTask free for 14 days and see what your schedule and time clock already record for you.

FAQ

What counts as ringa omfattning for a company van in Sweden?

Private use is disregarded only if it stays within both limits in the same calendar year: at most 10 occasions, and at most 100 mil (1,000 km). Both must hold. Eleven short private trips fails even if the total is 50 km, and nine trips of 150 km each fails on distance. Breach either limit and the full annual benefit value applies from January, not just to the extra trips.

Does a fitted service van avoid company van benefit tax?

Usually it reduces the value rather than removing it. Where fixed racking, plant and livery genuinely limit private usefulness, the employer can apply to Skatteverket for an adjusted (jamkad) benefit value. Full exemption is reserved for vehicles that cannot reasonably work as private transport at all, such as a crane truck or a permanently bodied tipper. A panel van with racking down one side is not in that category.

Is a korjournal legally required in Sweden?

No law obliges you to keep one. But the burden of proof sits with you: if the van is at your disposal, Skatteverket presumes private use, and a contemporaneous driving log is the only evidence that reliably rebuts it. Record date, driver, odometer start and finish, addresses, purpose and a business or private marker. The year must reconcile to the odometer with no unexplained kilometres.

How far back can Skatteverket question a van benefit?

Skatteverket can reopen an income year within two years of the end of the assessment year as routine, and up to six years where information filed was incorrect or incomplete. That is why records written on the day matter: the question arrives long after anyone remembers the week involved. Keep logs, the private-use policy and the fitted-interior photos for at least six years.

How is an electric van's benefit value calculated?

It uses the same formula as any car benefit, based on the list price when new plus extras, a share of the prisbasbelopp, an interest-related component tied to the statslaneranta, and actual vehicle tax. Since July 2022 electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles get a fixed reduction of the new-car price rather than a percentage discount, capped relative to price. Check current amounts at skatteverket.se.

Does driving the van home from work count as private use?

Yes. Commuting between home and your workplace is private driving in Sweden and counts against both ringa omfattning limits. A trip that starts at home and goes directly to a customer is business driving, so an on-call van is not automatically a problem. But parking it at home every night, without a written ban and a reconciled log, is the hardest fact to argue past.
